List of leon’s coaching rules

1 – Straight ball, straight run is not acceptable.

Here are two examples of it not working.

2 – Forwards have to control the ball, or at least get a touch when playing with their back to goal.

3 – Square balls only cause trouble – Do not play a square ball

Examples of square balls gone wrong below.

4 – When dribbling you should not lose the ball. There are three end products.

i) beat a player

ii) lay the ball

iii) aim for the corners

5 – Take advantage of short corners whenever possible.

6 – Crosses must go beyond the first defender

7 – Know two options for crosses

i) Early whip ( as shown below )

ii) Drive on & pull back ( as shown below )

8 – When defending, stop the passing lane forward – PRIORITY

9 – Covering defender must not get split

10 – Shots should not go over the bar or off at the near post

Soccer Homework – Ball manipulation

Touching the ball consistently and efficiently with different parts of the foot. To complete the iSoccer Comfort Assessment, complete the following two exercises within the 5×5 (meter) grid.
1) Toe Taps: touch the ball with sole of your foot using alternating feet. Each touch counts as one point. You’re going to do this for 20 seconds. Record your score and get ready for the next assessment.
2) Foundations: using the inside of your foot, knock the ball back and forth. Each touch counts as one point. You’re going to do this for 20 seconds. Good work, you’ve completed the iSoccer Comfort Assessment exercises. Record your scores and complete the rest of the assessment.

As a reminder, this is what we look for with ball manipulation.

  • Ball Manipulation – the ability to ‘manipulate’ the ball in various directions when under pressure, when using feet and when using various surfaces of the foot i.e. inside, outside, lace, sole, toe, and heel.
